Born in the heart of the Cederberg, this South African sun-drenched rooibos offers the generosity of its exceptionally biodiverse terroir. Its smooth, theine-free infusion distills pleasantly woody, vanilla flavours that can be enjoyed both hot and iced.

Terroir
The Wupperthal farm is located over 1000 meters above sea level, in the arid heights of the Cederberg, in South Africa's Western Cape province. The region is characterized by a Mediterranean climate, with most precipitation occurring during the summer months, marked by occasional thunderstorms and torrential rain. Due to its arid climate, rivers and streams are often seasonal, depending on rainfall. This favors sandy, silty and acidic soils. Wildlife includes the Cape mountain zebra, klipspringer and Cape leopard, as well as numerous bird species.
Community projects and challenges
Faced with the impacts of climate change and the challenge of rural exodus, the Wupperthal cooperative remains determined, transforming its own freshly cut rooibos into a delicious, Demeter-certified beverage using biodynamic farming methods.Also WFTO-labeled, the cooperative is committed to the community through the Fair Trade Premium. It provides support by financing scholarships for students, with the aim of empowering young people in rural areas. In the face of rising temperatures and forest fires, the cooperative also offers training courses focused on preventing the risks associated with natural disasters, while helping to rebuild homes in the village of Wupperthal, ravaged by fire in 2018.
Organic farming
We have always offered organically grown teas and herbal teas, and used natural, organic flavours. We go even further, demanding that our suppliers use certified organic flavor carriers and solvents. Certified since 1994.
Fair trade
A WFTO (World Fair Trade Organization) certified member, Les Jardins de Gaïa has been committed to fair trade since its creation: from the tea leaf to the cup, all our practices meet fair trade requirements. To find out more: www.wfto.com.
The technical moment
Harvesting takes place during the austral summer, between February and April, after the flowering period.
The stems are cut with a sickle and gathered into bundles. They are then chopped into 2 to 5 mm pieces before being spread out on the tea court, where they are watered abundantly and compressed to initiate the cellular activity linked to oxidation. The final stage is drying in the sun.
Tea and food pairings
For a successful pairing, rooibos should be overdosed or over-infused to bring out its natural woody and vanilla flavours with the food. As a result, it's a perfect match for "classic" breakfasts and snacks: toast, pastries, cakes or madeleines, but also most desserts, making it a perfect candidate for a "café gourmand" caffeine-free version.
