Sowing the Future: an organic, fair-trade rooibos that supports Indigo Development & Change, the NGO working alongside producers in South Africa.

For more than 20 years, Indigo Development & Change has been supporting projects and initiatives led by rural communities in the Suid Bokkeveld region of South Africa through a participatory approach rooted in social engagement and sustainable development. By combining social justice, biodiversity conservation, and climate change adaptation, this nonprofit organization works alongside small-scale rooibos producers to preserve their livelihoods while preparing future generations.

“Semeuses d’avenir” is a rooibos tea from the “Les engagés” line created by Les Jardins de Gaïa, the proceeds from which fund projects for producers in the Suid Bokkeveld. Every cup enjoyed now helps fund concrete projects led directly by local communities.

Indigo Development & Change: Supporting Rooibos Producers in the Suid Bokkeveld for Over 20 Years

Founded in 2000 as an association and based in Nieuwoudtville, in South Africa’s Northern Cape Province, Indigo Development & Change has been an NGO deeply rooted in rural areas since 2006. Its name is inspired by a fynbos plant, known for its remarkable resistance to both extreme heat and cold spells—an image that perfectly reflects the resilience the organization seeks to foster within the communities it supports.

Since its founding, Indigo has worked closely with the Heiveld Cooperative and small-scale organic rooibos producers in the Suid Bokkeveld, a region synonymous with rooibos cultivation in South Africa. This collaboration enables the organization to implement and effectively assess the impact of its initiatives in rural communities.

Its mission is to reconcile social justice, environmental conservation, and sustainable development through participatory approaches that place residents at the center of decision-making and strengthen their capacity to take action locally. The organization promotes capacity building among rooibos farmers and supports their development on the ground while encouraging community autonomy in the face of new climate, economic, and social challenges.

Its initiatives include, in particular: sustainable management of natural resources, gender equality, biodiversity conservation, agroecology, and adaptation to climate change.

Rural Communities in South Africa Building Resilience in the Face of Climate Change

The Suid Bokkeveld is a region particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Prolonged droughts, heat waves, and dwindling water resources are making rooibos crops and the living conditions of farming families increasingly precarious each year.

To help communities address these challenges, Indigo has been developing adaptation projects for several years that rely on collective intelligence and knowledge sharing. These initiatives have a tangible impact on the resilience of South African rooibos producers and their families.

Its current flagship program, the Climate Champion Project, aims to support rooibos farmers so they can become active agents in building their communities’ resilience and strengthen their capacity to cope with climate change.

This momentum continues with the launch of a new program supported by the National Lotteries Commission. The program includes workshops, summer and winter schools, exchange visits among rooibos farmers, and other development initiatives designed to sustainably strengthen the adaptive capacities of rural communities.

At the same time, the Climate Smart Agriculture program, supported by the WWF Green Trust, is assisting a group of 17 organic rooibos farmers known as the Farmer Fellowship Organic Group. These farmers, primarily from the communities of Walterkraal, Kortkloof, and Melkkraal, participate in monthly training sessions on key topics:

soil fertility and health;
climate-smart agriculture;
ecosystem services;
biodiversity conservation;
adapting crops to periods of drought.

One of the project’s unique features lies in how it operates: trained South African rooibos producers then pass on their knowledge to other community members, thereby creating a genuine momentum for the dissemination of best production practices.

Participatory trials have also been set up on several farms to test different methods for improving soil organic matter. The goal is to strengthen the natural resilience of rooibos plants in the face of increasingly frequent droughts.

The project also contributes to the preservation of the exceptional ecosystems and biodiversity of the Suid Bokkeveld production region, located at the intersection of the fynbos and succulent Karoo biomes—two particularly valuable reservoirs of biodiversity.

Workshops on climate change adaptation to support rooibos producers

Over the years, Indigo has developed an approach based primarily on collective learning.

Every quarter, climate change preparedness workshops bring together farmers from the region. Together, they analyze seasonal weather forecasts, discuss observed weather conditions, share their farming practices, and collectively brainstorm solutions to implement.

The most recent workshop, held on April 23, 2026, in Bloemfontein, perfectly illustrates this approach. Over the course of half a day, participants cross-referenced their field observations with available climate data to better anticipate future changes.

Divided into groups, they developed climate timelines detailing weather conditions over the past three to four months and their impact on crops, livestock, and water resources. Discussions focused in particular on heat waves, varying storm events, water-related challenges, and rising costs of agricultural inputs such as fuel and pesticides.

Each group identified solutions already implemented, desired adaptations, and the main obstacles encountered in the field.

A session dedicated to seasonal forecasts also helped participants better understand climate forecasting methods, the available data, and how to use this information in planning agricultural activities.

By combining scientific knowledge with on-the-ground experience, these workshops provide communities with practical tools to anticipate risks and enhance their adaptive capacity. Their impact is reflected in improved preparedness for climate-related hazards.

These meetings have become genuine forums for dialogue that strengthen community cohesion, foster the sharing of experiences, and contribute to the emergence of new community projects.

A partnership between Les Jardins de Gaia and Indigo Development & Change serving the communities of the Suid Bokkeveld

Since 2017, Les Jardins de Gaia has supported the communities of Suid Bokkeveld through the NGO CCFD-Terre Solidaire and its South African partner, Surplus People Project (SPP), an organization specializing in promoting agroecology and supporting farming communities.

Through this partnership, several initiatives have been carried out, including training programs for women on land access, agricultural production, and financial management. Between 2019 and 2020, these initiatives benefited more than a thousand people.

Today, Les Jardins de Gaïa aims to go even further by developing a direct partnership with the NGO Indigo Development & Change. This step reflects a desire to increase the visibility of the funded initiatives, better monitor the supported projects, and be better able to measure their impact on communities and their daily lives. Thanks to the NGO’s daily presence at the Heiveld rooibos cooperative, this new partnership makes it possible to identify needs more precisely and better tailor the actions carried out on the ground.

Several initiatives already illustrate this approach. In particular, a community garden pilot project has provided seeds, tools, and technical support to develop self-sufficient food production. Individual financial grants have also enabled certain families to launch income-generating activities.

In the longer term, Indigo aims to support the creation of a genuine local marketplace that enables the direct sale of vegetables and other produce within the communities, thereby helping to preserve the region’s economic autonomy.

Sowing the Future: A socially conscious rooibos that provides tangible support to producers

To support the actions and initiatives of Indigo Development & Change, Les Jardins de Gaïa has created “Sowing the Future” a rooibos tea from the “Les engagés – Agir pour la nature” line, from which €0.50 per bag purchased is directly donated to the NGO to fund projects that address the needs expressed by the producers themselves.

The main needs identified are as follows:

organizing workshops on preparing for climate change, enabling producers to analyze seasonal forecasts together, share their observations from the field, and collectively develop adaptation strategies;
the creation of community gardens to promote food self-sufficiency, interaction among residents, and, ultimately, the development of a space to market their produce;
training programs for women to develop income-generating activities and preserve their economic independence.

Reflecting this commitment, “Sowing the Future” is a rooibos tea dedicated to sharing. Its blend combines the sweetness of pineapple with the delicate aromas of mandarin, enhanced by subtle notes of licorice. A warm, bright, and optimistic infusion that embodies the values of solidarity, knowledge-sharing, and the future championed by Indigo.
