LPO: Two “Socially Conscious” Recipes for Bird Conservation
Support the LPO with our “Oiseau lune” tea and our “L’Envolée sauvage” herbal tea—recipes created to protect birds and biodiversity.
The LPO (League for the Protection of Birds) is a true symbol of bird conservation in France and Europe. Founded in 1912 on the initiative of agricultural engineer Albert Chappellier, the LPO’s first president was naturalist Louis Magaud d’Aubusson. Its history is closely tied to the campaign against the slaughter of Atlantic puffins during organized hunting expeditions in Brittany; the Atlantic puffin has since become its emblem.
The organization raises awareness about the decline of numerous species, threatened in particular by the intensification of agricultural practices and the loss of natural grasslands. This is the case for the “rieds” surrounding our company, which serve as habitat for the Eurasian curlew, also known as the “Moon Bird.”
With our activist tea named after this endangered bird and the “L’Envolée sauvage” herbal and spice blend—which inspires a desire to discover new horizons—we support the efforts of the LPO Alsace to protect one of the symbols of the Alsatian rieds.
The League for the Protection of Birds: An Organization That Takes Action Every Day
Active on the ground, LPO members serve as guardians for the many endangered bird species in our region. With 80,000 members in 2026, LPO France is now one of the leading nature conservation organizations in France.
Recognized as a public-interest organization, it works daily to safeguard biodiversity, with a particular focus on education and awareness-raising throughout the country through its many local chapters. The organization runs a network of wildlife rescue centers that care for distressed wildlife and, since 2016, has had a scientific and technical committee that helps guide long-term initiatives and studies.
Together, let’s protect the Eurasian curlew, known as the “Moon Bird”
The Franco-German Ramsar Rhinature project is exploring solutions to replace intensive corn farming with more environmentally friendly agricultural practices. In 2015 and 2016, the LPO Alsace focused its efforts on the town of Erstein (67).
Funds contributed by Les Jardins de Gaïa since 2013 have helped partially finance a gate that restricts access to the meadows where pairs of Eurasian curlews nest. This gate is unique in that it features openings designed like an observation deck and is accompanied by an informational sign, aimed at raising public awareness of the initiative and, above all, minimizing disturbance to the birds in the meadows—a major cause of the species’ decline.
Since late 2016, financial support from Jardins de Gaïa has been allocated to the binational Ramsar Rhinature project, which focuses on the conservation of threatened species in the Rhine region on both sides of the river. Meadow birds, including the Eurasian curlew, are naturally part of this effort.
Solutions do exist, such as replacing intensive corn farming with cattle raised on a diet of flowering meadow grasses (labels such as “Lait de foin,” “Le Bœuf d’Herbe,” etc.), the targeted breeding of water buffalo—whose milk can be used to make mozzarella—or the establishment of grasslands to produce energy in the form of pellets or to manufacture insulation panels. These are promising avenues!
Les Jardins de Gaïa: an LPO Refuge since 2015
The headquarters of Les Jardins de Gaïa, located in the wet meadows of Central Alsace, has been certified as an “LPO Refuge” and is home to bird species from the surrounding ried.
A “ried” (a wetland or floodplain in the Alsatian dialect) is a remarkable ecosystem unique to the region: the abundant, shallow water table regularly floods an entire area of meadows. These floodplains provide a natural habitat for exceptional flora and fauna but are threatened by the intensification of agriculture.
“Oiseau Lune” and “L’Envolée Sauvage”: a green tea and an organic herbal tea that are both socially conscious and delicious
Moonbird
A favorite among our customers, this distinctive tea is particularly bright and rich. With its sweet aromas of elderflower and pear, it seems made to pair with a fruit tart, cookies, or other treats… A creation featuring local flavors that we especially love to share.
The Wild Flight
This activist herbal tea is prized for its freshness and airy quality. With notes of lemon balm and linden, enhanced by eucalyptus, myrtle, and a hint of clove, it reveals a beautiful harmony of sweetness, freshness, and character. A drink that invites you to look up, take your time, and treat yourself to a moment of respite in the great outdoors.
