Sea Shepherd: Tea to Support Ocean Conservation
"A Tea for the Ocean" by Les Jardins de Gaïa supports the French branch of the NGO Sea Shepherd, which is fighting to protect marine life.
With "A Tea for the Ocean" part of our “Committed – Taking Action for Nature” line, we support Sea Shepherd, an NGO that knows how to “make some noise” when it comes to preserving the seas and oceans. Since its founding in 1977, Sea Shepherd has undoubtedly become the most vocal advocate for the protection of marine life, upon which our future directly depends. Its bold and activist approach has already saved many lives in marine ecosystems, and this philosophy resonates deeply with our company’s values.
An Iconic and Visionary Activist Organization
Sea Shepherd is an international non-governmental organization founded in 1977 by Captain Paul Watson, a former member of Greenpeace. Its primary goal is to protect the oceans and put an end to the destruction of marine ecosystems, caused mainly by overfishing, poaching, and pollution.
The 100% independent NGO receives no government funding to ensure its freedom of speech and action. It works on three major fronts:
- Going beyond mere protest to actively and nonviolently intervene in cases of illegal harm to marine life and marine ecosystems;
- Exposing abuses and unsustainable or unethical practices that harm marine life and the integrity of marine ecosystems by alerting the media and the public;
- Raising public awareness of the essential connection that binds us to the ocean through various initiatives at festivals, schools, conferences, exhibitions, publications, films, and more…
A bold, yet always nonviolent approach
Unlike some more discreet environmental organizations, Sea Shepherd uses direct and highly visible methods to combat destructive practices at sea. Although its approach is sometimes controversial, it is always based on principles of nonviolence, employing acts of civil disobedience aimed at disrupting illegal activities at sea.
Strong values that define the organization’s reputation
Sea Shepherd’s values are rooted in respect for and the protection of all forms of marine life. The NGO positions itself as a defender of vulnerable marine creatures, including whales, dolphins, sea turtles, sharks, and more. The goal is to raise public awareness about the critical issues facing our shared future regarding ocean conservation while putting pressure on governments and industries responsible for the destruction of marine habitats.
Operations at Sea: A Constant Presence and Iconic Campaigns
Sea Shepherd regularly deploys its ships to sensitive areas such as Antarctica, where it fights against whaling, or the South China Sea, where it combats illegal shark fishing. The organization conducts surveillance missions, documents illegal activities, and, in some cases, intervenes to prevent these practices by disrupting poachers’ operations. One of the organization’s most famous projects remains its campaign against whaling, carried out in Antarctica against Japanese fishing fleets.
Among the NGO’s many iconic campaigns are:
- Operation Icefish: this mission, launched in 2014, aimed to stop the illegal fishing of Patagonian toothfish, a species threatened with extinction in Antarctic waters. Sea Shepherd succeeded in significantly disrupting the poachers’ activities;
- Operation Sharkwater: this campaign targets the illegal shark fin trade, one of the most devastating practices for shark populations;
- Operations Jairo, Jairo Med, and Nyamba #5: These missions were organized to combat sea turtle poaching in Central and South America, the Mediterranean, and the Mayotte archipelago, respectively.
Sea Shepherd’s actions are not limited to interventions at sea. The organization also conducts awareness campaigns in schools, organizes screenings of documentary films, and participates in international environmental conferences, always with the goal of raising awareness.
“If we fail to save species as charismatic as whales, we will save nothing else in the ocean. Yet if the ocean dies, we die. A world without whales would not only be a disenchanted world; it would be a world without us.” Lamya ESSEMLALI - President of SEA SHEPHERD FRANCE
A major impact on ocean conservation through numerous victories
Sea Shepherd has achieved significant successes in ocean protection thanks to its sometimes spectacular actions, but also thanks to strategic partnerships that the NGO has skillfully established.
In Antarctica, in 2018, the NGO forced Japan to end whaling in southern waters. It is estimated that this great victory, following years of relentless campaigning, saved more than 5,000 whales from Japanese harpoons.
In the Gulf of California, Operation Milagro helped protect the vaquita, a critically endangered porpoise, by removing hundreds of illegal nets and collaborating with Mexican authorities to combat poaching.
In West Africa, Sea Shepherd conducted joint operations with local governments, notably in Gabon, to combat illegal fishing. These actions led to the arrest of crews on poaching vessels and the confiscation of thousands of kilometers of banned nets. Marine ecosystems and fishery resources were thus preserved.
Legal and diplomatic actions accompanied by a shift in public perception
Sea Shepherd has played a crucial role in the adoption of laws and international agreements for the protection of marine wildlife. Through its actions at sea and its documentation of illegal practices, the organization has contributed to the implementation of stricter restrictions on commercial fishing and whaling. This impressive work has, for example, increased pressure on countries like Japan to comply with international moratoriums on whaling.
Through its media campaigns and dramatic actions, Sea Shepherd has also succeeded in raising awareness among the global public about the need to protect the oceans. Today, more and more consumers are turning to sustainable products from responsible fisheries, reflecting a shift in global attitudes.
A Tea for the Ocean: A refreshing taste of the ocean in your cup
To support Sea Shepherd France’s efforts, Les jardins de Gaïa has created “A Tea for the Ocean” as part of the “Committed – Taking Action for Nature” line, continuing its commitment to donate €0.50 to the organization for every tea bag purchased.
This original recipe, made with oolong tea, is dedicated to the protectors of the oceans. After an initial burst of citrus notes from the ginger, the combination of peppermint and rosemary—the sailors’ herb—brings a breath of fresh air to this deep, aromatic blue-green tea.
Don’t hesitate to discover it, enjoy it, and thereby support Sea Shepherd’s remarkable commitment—always on the front lines to prevent us from causing irreversible harm to the seas and oceans on which we all depend.
“If the ocean dies, we all die. Today, we may be considered extremists by some, but for future generations, we will be good ancestors.” Paul WATSON - Founder of SEA SHEPHERD
