Treat yourself to an olfactory and tasty change of scenery

This stoneware tea burner (chakoro) operates with a tealight candle(1) and is used with Japanese green tea leaves. For several hours, it fills a room with the sweet fragrance typical of Japanese ryokan(2).

A real olfactory change of scenery, very different from that provided by incense, and without the fumes.

This ingenious chakoro can also be used to roast green tea and transform it into hojicha. A small tea twig for stirring the leaves during roasting and a tea stand are included.

This handcrafted object is handmade in the town of Shigaraki in Japan by Sawa Houzan, a ceramist belonging to a line of potters established over three generations, whose work is particularly appreciated by connoisseurs.

Dimensions (with dish): Diameter: 9.5 cm; Height: 8 cm

(2) Ryokans are traditional Japanese inns.

Handcrafted tea burner (Dual-purpose) - Chakoro from Japan

Making your own hojicha at home

Trying your hand at roasting your own green tea and transforming it into hojicha is a real olfactory and tasty change of scenery! To do this, we use a small clay stove called a chakoro, powered simply by a tea light. With each use, the green tea deposited in the cup gently evolves towards increasingly roasted fragrances: releasing a scent very different from that of incense, and without the fumes of smoke. This immediately creates a soothing atmosphere typical of traditional Japanese inns (ryokan). Its low height means it can be used like a frying pan. A small tea twig for stirring the leaves during roasting and a tea stand are included. A beautiful and original handcrafted object.

Instructions for use

Place 2 or 3 large pinches of tea in the dish, light the tea candle and stir occasionally. You can start tasting the result after half an hour's use. You can roast the green tea more or less to suit your taste.

Which tea to use?

Preferably Japanese and entry-level steamed teas such as our Top Quality Sencha, Aki Bancha or Korean Green Tea. But feel free to try other origins.

Care instructions :

Rinse with clean water.
