New Zealand teas, an ancestral savoir-faire

Publish on 09.20.2024 by Gaia Gardens

For many people, New Zealand is all about heavenly beaches, sumptuous glaciers, bewitching primeval forests and green expanses as far as the eye can see..

But ever since an enlightened tea enthusiast decided to plant tea bushes on the island a few decades ago, after discovering that many species of Camellia thrive particularly well here, the island has become a recognized tea-growing terroir.

Remarkable Grand Cru teas

It was on the North Island, in the Waikato region, that our New Zealand partner set out to grow Camellia Sinensis in the midst of these fascinating landscapes, where many varieties of Camellia flourish naturally. An experiment he began in 1996 with a selection of 130 plants.

These were taken from different parts of Asia and given ideal growing conditions. The growing region is close to the Pacific Ocean, with hot, humid summers and mild winters, and benefits from 1200 to 1600 mm of rainfall per year and plenty of sunshine.

In just a few decades, our New Zealand partner has developed a range of top-quality teas, including wu long teas comparable to the best produced in these historic countries, using manufacturing techniques derived from traditional Chinese and Taiwanese know-how.

Oolong teas of great organoleptic richness, the fruit of exceptional terroir and craftsmanship

The semi-oxidized teas from this garden are made from the Taiwanese Qing Xin cultivar, which is used to produce top-of-the-range teas. Their flavors reveal themselves in particularly pronounced sequences that evolve throughout the tasting and the many infusions that such teas allow. The result of a combination of high standards and patience, these teas will delight any wu long lover looking for cups that are as complex as they are exciting.

Dragon Soul Wu Long

Noble as the spirit of the Maoris, this wu long is surprising in more ways than one. Its generous pearls offer a delicious infusion with notes of pink grapefruit, wild flowers, hot stone, vanilla, pistachio and ripe quetsche... A singular generosity that cannot leave the palate indifferent..

Oceanic Wu Long

Its pearl-rolled leaves have been "slow-cooked" during processing to produce a dense, rich and very fruity liqueur. The variety of flavors is impressive: yellow fruit (apricot), currant, toasted bread crust, nuts (hazelnut)... A very gourmet wu long!

Charming Wu Long

Its briefly roasted leaves produce a liqueur of remarkable intensity and long finish. Garrigue flower honey, brown sugar, stewed fruit, toasted thyme cookies: each sip is a veritable festival of flavors.

Venerable Wu Long

This wu long is unique in that it has been aged for at least five years in a clay pot. This long maturation gives this tea a unique organoleptic signature. On the palate, this tea reveals itself in particularly marked successive sequences that evolve throughout the tasting. It begins with a beautiful woody attack that leaves an intense impression on the palate, followed by fruity notes that evoke figs, grapes and caramelized roasted hazelnuts. This grand cru brings intense, almost intoxicating gustatory pleasure, leaving a memorable impression on the palate that is renewed by the many infusions such a tea can be used for. It will satisfy any wu long lover looking for a cup as complex as it is exciting.

Gourmet black teas with intense flavours

From this terroir with its unique minerality and particularly favorable climate, these grand crus of black teas have extracted exceptional organoleptic richness.

Black Evidence

Intense and gourmand are the first words that come to mind when tasting this black tea with character. Its finely twisted leaves and buds offer a liquor that deeply imbues the palate with chocolatey, biscuity flavors accompanied by subtle notes of red fruit..

Waikato Melody

This generous, supple infusion delivers intense fruity flavors reminiscent of yellow fruit stewed in brown sugar, enhanced by tangy, effervescent notes.

A confidential green tea

Waikato Pleasure

The crystalline, dense and complex infusion of this beautiful green tea evolves throughout the tasting between vegetal, iodized, fruity (citrus) and sweet (confectionery) notes.
