Terroir
The SOFA - Small Organic Farmer Association - cooperative is one of Les Jardins de Gaïa's long-standing partners. It produces tea and a wide range of spices in the south of Sri Lanka, in the Kandy and Matale districts. The climate is predominantly tropical, but can be subtropical or mountainous at higher altitudes. There are also variations in soil types. In low-lying areas, the soils are alluvial, while in the highlands, the soil is often red and laterite. The Mahaweli River, the island's longest, supplies the districts with irrigation water. Rainfall is regular and increases during the monsoon season. Like the soil and climate, biodiversity here is extremely varied, with endemic animals such as the Ceylon Coryllis and the Langur gris living in the district's tropical forests.
Community projects
The cooperative is Fairtrade certified, enabling the deployment of various agricultural development projects such as the funding of a self-employment assistance program. The latter grants interest-free loans specifically to women, to help them move towards better economic opportunities.
Organic farming
We have always offered organically grown teas and herbal teas, and used natural, organic flavours. We go even further, demanding that our suppliers use certified organic flavor carriers and solvents. Certified since 1994.

is the brand for products from certified biodynamic agriculture. We promote biodynamic agriculture, which corresponds to the original balance, where man lives in harmony with the chain of life, and respects a complex system of multiple natural influences. Certified since 2003.
Plain tea
White, green, black and dark teas from China, India, Japan and elsewhere are all varieties from the same plant: the tea plant. Once plucked, the leaf is processed in different ways, undergoing numerous transformations. Depending on the terroir, the fineness of the leaf and the way it is processed, the result is an unlimited palette of tastes and vintages.
The farming moment
In biodynamics, the preparation "compost de bouse" is a concentrated natural fertilizer.
Cow dung is the base, which is then mixed with eggshells, basalt and six biodynamic compost preparations. Once the soil is dark, after a minimum of three months, application will help plants better assimilate soil nutrients.
This compost also accelerates the decomposition of fresh organic matter.
Tea and food pairings
This mild yet intense green tea can be paired with shellfish, fried vegetables or a yellow fruit dessert to enhance its sweet flavors.
