Tea Sommelier Course
Tea, with its wide range of flavors, diversity of colors, and refined utensils, intrigues and attracts more and more knowledgeable enthusiasts.
Eager to consume a healthy, non-alcoholic beverage in a different way, its followers attribute deeply relaxing properties to it. In particular, they enjoy taking the time to drink tea mindfully, listening to their feelings and their five senses.
Tea sommeliering, a profession that has been developing in Europe for several years, can now be learned, just like wine. To this end, we created a tea school in 2017 to share our knowledge and meet these new training needs.
Tea sommelier course - Cycle 3
Passing on the art of tea and a philosophy
The Jardins de Gaïa tea school draws its teaching methods from various Western and Asian influences, combining practical exercises with theoretical lessons punctuated by periods of meditation.
For our benefactor company, which has been working for organic, biodynamic agriculture and fair trade for over 30 years, passing on the art of tea goes hand in hand with defending agriculture that respects living things. We firmly believe that we need to rediscover meaning and consistency in our daily consumption habits and, to this end, pay attention to both the origin of the tea and the way it is prepared and served.
Taking a few seconds to contemplate a bowl that has been handcrafted for hours, watching the infused tea leaves slowly unfurl as they grew in the fields, feeling the effects of the drink on your body, is indeed a way of honoring the craftsmanship of the artisan and a way of thanking Nature for the fruits it gives us. It is also a simple way to reconnect with oneself.
Tea is synonymous with hospitality and conviviality throughout the world. Learning to serve it with respect is a way of affirming one's desire to live together.
It is a world that conveys beautiful values, and we are happy to share our passion with you through this professional training course.
Who is the training course aimed at? How does it work? What does it teach?
The training course is conducted online and is aimed at anyone interested in the world of tea, both professionals and individuals, who wish to learn about the tea trade or deepen their knowledge in this field. Trainees receive packages at home containing around 100 tea samples and educational materials enabling them to follow the courses live using their own equipment.
During 70 hours of classes, spread over 9 months, at a rate of 2 hours per week, with "homework" assigned between classes, trainees gradually acquire the skills of a tea sommelier.
As with wine tasting, you will learn to analyze the aromatic palettes of tea and their organoleptic characteristics, as well as the basics of the "language of tea." The work on technique, which is at the heart of the training, is assessed through continuous assessment and the submission of videos filmed by the participants themselves in order to "correct" any "mistakes" (Gaiwan, Kyusu, and Matcha).
At the end of the training, you will be able to advise your friends and family and/or your customers on their purchases and select all the parameters for an "optimal" infusion (weight, time and temperature, water quality, etc.). You will also have acquired the basics of designing tea and food pairings, as well as how to use tea in cooking and mocktails.
Finally, you will be able to distinguish, by sight and taste, the terroirs, tea plant varieties, harvesting methods, and processing methods of the teas presented during the exercises. The wealth of historical, botanical, and cultural information on the subject will also complement your theoretical knowledge and enable you to more easily answer questions from your (future) customers.
