OUR HISTORY Les Jardins de Gaïa

Defending the earth and living things. Acting for a better, more responsible and happier world.
Actions, emotions.

In the mind of Arlette Rohmer

An idea, a project, born and matured in the mind of Arlette Rohmer for many years. A keen traveller and plant enthusiast, she wanted to give more to the people she met around the world, and reveal the flavours and riches of the countries she explored, through tea, the most widely drunk beverage in the world after water.

In 1994, she set up Les Jardins de Gaïa, with the aim of introducing people to premium teas and other incredible plants from Asia, Africa and South America, but only organically grown. In the '90s, there was very little production available. Her challenge was to travel to the tea-producing countries and find projects and producers willing to follow her on this ambitious adventure..

Tea comes from an evergreen shrub, Camellia Sinensis. For a long time, botanists and horticulturists thought that there were two kinds of tea, green and black. But in 1843, botanist Robert Fortune proved that these two types were derived from the same plant, and only later differentiated according to the transformations undergone to make the tea.

The tea plant requires a warm, humid tropical climate and well-drained soil. As with wine, the quality of tea produced will vary according to the nature of the soil, altitude, climate, sunshine, harvesting time and manufacturing process. White tea, green tea, blue-green tea, black tea, tea from China, India, Japan or elsewhere are all varieties from the same plant. Once plucked, the leaf is processed in different ways, with varying degrees of transformation. Depending on the terroir, the fineness of the leaf and the way it is processed, the result is an unlimited palette of tastes and vintages.

Since that day, Les Jardins de Gaïa's development has been relentless. Arlette Rohmer's passion for tea and her thirst to offer customers and partners quality products that respect nature and mankind have enabled her to maintain and develop direct relationships with producers. Small-scale producers and small-scale projects are always given priority in order to promote agriculture on a human scale, thus enabling us to multiply our choices and improve the quality of our teas as each harvest progresses, while at the same time exposing these "small producers" to the international scene.
