Make your own hojicha

Experimenting with roasting your own green tea and turning it into hojicha is a delicious and aromatic experience! You can do this using a small clay stove called a chakoro, which is powered by a single tea light.

The green tea placed in the cup gradually takes on increasingly roasted aromas, releasing a fragrance quite different to that of incense and without producing any smoke. This straight away creates a soothing ambience typical of traditional Japanese inns (ryokan).

The chakoro we use, available on our website and in our shop, is crafted by the talented Japanese potter Sawa Houzan, who also makes our prestigious gyokuro sets. Its low height means it can be used like a pan. Also included are a small tea twig used for stirring the leaves while they are roasting and a stand.

This is a beautiful and original handmade object.

Instructions for use

Place two or three large pinches of tea in the cup, light the tea light and stir occasionally. You can start to taste the results after half an hour. You can roast the green tea for a longer or shorter time depending on your preference.

Which tea to use?

Preferably Japanese and entry-level steamed teas such as our Sencha Top Quality, our Aki Bancha or our Korean Green Tea. But you can also try others.
